Nepal - Everest Motherland

Nepal is a Himalayan country sandwiched between two large giants of Asia in which China on the North and India on the south. The prominent religion is Hindu with 81.3 percent of its population following it but Nepal is also famously known as the birthplace of Buddha and is a principal place of pilgrimage for Buddhist followers around the world. Kathmandu, the capital and largest city in Nepal is a bustling city with a population of 1,424,000 as of 2020. The decaying buildings in the heart of the city are a stark contrast to the lively atmosphere that permeates the streets. The smell of incense wafts from stores while street sellers push their goods, and people go about their daily lives, all against a backdrop of historic temples and carved statues. Thamel is the core centre in Kathmandu where many hotels, lodges, restaurants and Nightlife exist. It is the busiest centre in Nepal where Tourists flock in large numbers and where it’s always Saturday night with Pubs and entertainment centres active especially after 6 pm.

Nepal being in the Himalayas is quite renowned for Trekking as eight of the world tallest mountains are based out here with the famous MOUNT EVEREST standing here at an elevation of 8848 meters above sea level. Many trekkers are lured to Nepal to quench their thirst of trekking mount Everest. There are two main climbing routes, one approaching the summit from the southeast in Nepal and the other from the north in Tibet.

Kathmandu has many other sacred and historic attractions aside from Nightlife. Common attractions include swayambhunath stupa, Durbar square (UNESCO World Heritage Site), Boudha stupa (largest Buddhist stupa in the Kathmandu Valley and UNESCO World Heritage Site), Pashupatinath temple and so on.

Other famous must-visit places outside Kathmandu are Chitwan National Park for wildlife viewing. The park is home to rhinos, Bengal tigers, leopards, sloth bears, gaur (buffalo), deer, and many other critters. Freshwater dolphins (Gangetic) and crocodiles inhabit the rivers and streams but are rarely seen. More than 500 species of birds make Chitwan a paradise for ornithologists. Tours from the lodges take you out into the park, either on foot, or more often, on elephants for close-up views of the animals. Chitwan lies southwest of Kathmandu close to the Indian frontier and is included in the UNESCO list of world cultural heritage sites.

The summit of Mount Everest, the highest mountain on earth, reaches 8,848 meters (29,028 feet) high. Trekking in the Mount Everest area became popular following the now legendary first ascent of the peak in 1953 by Edmund Hillary from New Zealand and the Sherpa Tenzing Norgay.

Since that time, many more have summited the mountain, but far more trek the route to Everest Base Camp simply for a glimpse of the peak far above. In recent years the mountain has seen its fair share of tragedy and drama. The 2015 earthquake and previous avalanches, along with disputes between climbers on the mountain, have left their mark on Everest trekking and climbing. The main hiking seasons are in the spring and fall, from March to May and September to December. For those not looking to trek to Mount Everest but still wanting to see the mountain, it is possible to see it on clear days from the hill town of Nagarkot in Kathmandu. Hotel staff will knock on guests’ doors on clear mornings if Everest is visible. This might be the lazy traveller’s best chance of seeing the world’s highest peak.
